In this fast-paced, stressful world, it is often hard to find time to do the things that we truly enjoy. How many times have you said, "If only I had the time to.."
The truth is that you will never have time for your hobbies, if you do not make time for them. It is a true saying that, on their deathbed, no one ever wishes that they had spent more time at work. The question is how many people wish that they had devoted more time to their hobbies. Here are some tips to help you to make time for your hobbies.
Set aside a regular time for an activity you enjoy. You could sign up for a weekly evening class on a new hobby or area of interest. That will encourage you to take time out for the hobby by attending the class. Your fellow students will also help and inspire you to devote the time to your hobby. If you wish to find time for a hobby that you pursue by yourself, you should make a weekly date in your diary and honor that date no matter what, just as you would honor a business meeting or a romantic date. If your hobby is a team sport or something that you do with one or more people, make and keep a weekly date with the other participants.
Don't make excuses. Once you have set aside a regular time each week for your hobby, don't make any excuses for not honoring this appointment. If you feel very tired after work, pursue your hobby anyway. It is very likely that you will feel much more energized afterwards than if you had spent the evening slumped in front of the television.
Minimize distractions. If you are pursuing a hobby alone, it is very easy to get distracted from it, especially if you are at home. It only takes your child to interrupt you with a question or for the television to be switched on loudly in the next room for you to be jolted from your purpose. For this reason, try and choose a regular time when other members of your family will not be around to distract you.
Don't feel guilty about taking the time out for your hobby. You may feel guilty yourself, perhaps thinking that you should be getting on with the housework rather than taking time out for your hobby. Others may try and make you feel guilty, perhaps demanding your attention when you wish to focus on your hobby. Don't allow these feelings of guilt to stop you from taking the time out for your hobby. You deserve that time to yourself and you will feel energized as a result, making you more useful to the other people in your life at other times.
Set goals for your hobby. Don't set too many goals, as this is likely to make your hobby less enjoyable. However, if you set just a few goals a year, you will have something to aim for and this will motivate you to keep up your regular weekly hobby time. For example, if your hobby is running, your first goal could be to compete in a short run in a few months' time, your second goal could be to enter a longer run, your subsequent goal could be a half-marathon and so on.
If you follow these pointers, you will find that your life becomes enriched by the time spent dedicated to your hobbies. You are likely to feel happier, healthier and more able to meet the daily challenges that life presents.
